What's legal
DC legalized sports betting in 2018, and the law took effect in 2019 after congressional review. The city's own app, GambetDC, launched on May 28, 2020. On April 15, 2024, the Office of Lottery and Gaming (OLG) replaced it with FanDuel. The Sports Wagering Act of 2024 took effect on July 15, 2024, and moved DC to private licensing.
OLG now issues three kinds of operator license. Class A covers sportsbooks at Capital One Arena, Audi Field, Nationals Park and the St. Elizabeth's East arena. Class B covers other single-venue sportsbooks. Class C covers district-wide online and mobile apps. OLG's approved-license list dated October 16, 2026 shows six district-wide apps: Caesars, FanDuel and BetMGM under Class A licenses, and bet365, DraftKings and Fanatics under temporary Class C licenses. Apps are restricted inside the two-block zones around other operators' arenas and on federal land. The minimum age is 18, lower than in most states.
Crypto and offshore sites
Offshore crypto sportsbooks hold no DC license, or a license anywhere else in the US. Only operators on OLG's approved-license list may take sports bets in the District. A site that is not on the list is unlicensed, whatever its homepage claims, and you would have no regulator to complain to if a withdrawal stalled.
Check OLG's current list before you deposit. It changes: bet365 was added in June 2026.
What's changing
bet365 received a temporary Class C license on June 24, 2026, and launched in DC on September 8, 2026, alongside a partnership with Monumental Sports and Entertainment, owner of the Capitals, Wizards and Mystics. The three Class C licenses on OLG's list are temporary, with extended terms.
OLG taxes operators on gross sports wagering revenue: 20% for Class A, 10% for Class B and 30% for Class C. A Class C license carries a $2 million initial fee and a five-year term.
Tax
DC taxes income at graduated rates, with a top rate of 10.75% on income over $1 million, so gambling winnings count as taxable income on top of federal tax.
